A team of about 300 full-time and 650 part-time staff members strong, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium benefits the lives of more than 1,415 species across 162 acres of land. We also support the efforts of numerous field conservation projects and research projects that help ensure a future for endangered and critically endangered flora and fauna around the world, even right here in Nebraska.

Employee Recruitment Process

Applicants looking to start a career at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium will undergo a very thorough five-part selection process.

Before applying for a position, please review the following requirements. Our candidates must meet these criteria to advance onto the next phase of the process.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Have a love for animals and enjoy working with people
  • Must have a positive and outgoing attitude
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures, especially those found in our handbook
  • Undergo a background and drug-screening test

 

Screening

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's hiring managers carefully screen each applicant based on the criteria and qualifications required for each position.

Interviewing

If an applicant has successfully passed the screening process, they will be invited to partake in an interview. Interviews will be done either in-person or via telephone.

Each candidate will complete an interview with a hiring manager regardless of the position's status (full-time or part-time). A human resources representative will also be present during interviews involving full-time position candidates.

Please consider the following tips before your interview:

  • Review Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's mission statement.
  • Dress to impress.
  • Carefully read over the job description.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early for your interview.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions before your interview.
  • Create a list of questions to ask the hiring manager and have them ready at the time of your interview.
  • Remain calm, stay positive and just be yourself.

 

Post-Interview

Once all interviews have been completed, a hiring manager or human resources representative will contact each applicant to inform them if they have been selected for the position. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's staff will ensure this process goes as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Onboarding

If the applicant has accepted the offer for a full-time or part-time position, they will undergo one day of orientation, which will cover Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's history, as well as the benefits they are entitled to. Additional training may be included once orientation is complete.

Job Shadowing

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a multi-faceted operation and we try to develop job shadowing opportunities to encompass all aspects of the Zoo. We offer opportunities for students 11th grade and older.
