Antarctica 2D

About

It is a land of mystery and yet what happens here affects every single one of us. With never-before seen footage, Antarctica, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, brings audiences to the farthest reaches of this wild and majestic continent. It is the coldest, driest and windiest place on Earth with the roughest oceans and yet, weird and wonderful creatures thrive here in astounding abundance. Antarctica is the perfect fit for the Giant Screen.

Using the latest underwater filming techniques, dive beneath sea ice, more than 6 feet thick, to experience the alien world of its seafloor - thousands of purple starfish scuttling to escape being entrapped by growing ice and elaborate jellyfish dancing a deadly dance. Swim alongside playful seals, soar above mountain peaks and vast penguin colonies and witness the largest congregation of fin and humpback whales ever filmed.

Although so remote from us, Antarctica and its surrounding Southern Ocean play a vital role for the entire planet, regulating ocean currents, sea levels and its wildlife-filled waters can absorb huge amounts of carbon. New science is revealing that dramatic changes are occurring and rapidly warming this pristine land of snow and ice. No one owns Antarctica but it will take global cooperation and collaboration to protect it and ensure the future health of our planet.

Alaskan Adventure

Open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily weather-permitting. Will not operate if there is rain, snow, ice or if the temperature will not reach 70 degrees by noon.

Alaskan Adventure is a splashgrounds with unique water features. It was also the next step of the Zoo's Master Plan, following the African Grasslands, and will eventually include a new sea lion pool and a home for polar bears.

The exhibit is Alaskan-themed, featuring dancing waters through sprays and spouts and over 75 bronze sculptures created by Nebraska’s own, Matthew Placzek. The spraying water is managed through computerized controls, systematically spraying a mix of water and air through nozzles arranged around the sculptures to simulate the water effects made by the animals as they breech, porpoise, splash, spray water from their blowholes and emerge from or dive into the ocean.

The centerpiece of Alaskan Adventure is an 18-foot-high humpback whale which has water trailing from its extended fins. A whale’s tail is a separate sculpture and is 16 feet wide and eight feet tall with water flowing from the edge as it appears to submerge for a deep dive. Additional bronze sculptures include: 30 jumping salmon, 25 puffins, 15 sea lions sunning on rocks, three porpoising orcas and three brown bears. Misting nozzles and native Alaskan landscape surround this new area to truly allow Zoo guests to feel like they are in Alaska.

The Alaskan-themed splash ground is a way to incorporate animals and large species that the Zoo does not currently have, and gives kids the opportunity to learn about some of the  animals that can be seen near the Alaska coastline.

Alaskan Adventure will be located near Red Barn Park and Sue’s Carousel, making this area of the Zoo a hub for kids’ activities.  A family changing area is also located near the new exhibit.

This exhibit is free to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium members or with paid general Zoo admission.

Glacier Bay Landing

Glacier Bay Landing

Glacier Bay Landing features many public amenities near Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s North Gate. The area, inspired by Alaskan coastal towns, offers unique food choices, a variety of seating options, new restrooms with changing areas and two family restrooms, a rental picnic area, a new ticket booth, a semi-private nursing mom area and a lighthouse-themed play structure for kids.

The architecture and landscape of Glacier Bay Landing continues the surrounding area’s Pacific Northwest theme seen in Alaskan Adventure and the upcoming Sea Lion Shores. Perhaps the highlight of the area is a sea plane that welcomes visitors into the area. Sea planes are commonly used in Alaska for taxi service, ambulance, sightseeing and wildlife viewing. The sea plane in Glacier Bay Landing has had its engine removed and is for viewing only.

Concessions and Seating Areas
Throughout Glacier Bay Landing, Zoo visitors find a variety of seating options: 276 chairs placed around tables in the public plaza, 240 seats in Fisherman’s Landing at Stinson Pier and seating for 165 along 330 linear feet of benches. Seven large fixed shade covers over the public plaza along with numerous umbrellas create abundant shaded seating areas.

The concessions building at Glacier Bay Landing is equipped with ten service windows. Visitors can order from a variety of new menu items, including a Crab Cake Slider, Alaskan Cod Sandwich, Garlic Parmesan Fries and a Glacier Bay Signature Cheeseburger.

A Sweet Shop with three service windows offers dessert options also new to the Zoo, such as edible cookie dough, loaded sundaes and a variety of frozen beverages.

Fisherman’s Landing at Stinson Pier
Fisherman’s Landing at Stinson Pier is a rental area that can accommodate daytime picnics as well as evening events. The completely covered pavilion has two large fans, 15 skylights and pathway lights throughout the space. The pavilion has an open kitchen concept for catering use. Capacity for Fisherman’s Landing at Stinson Pier is seating for 240.

Children’s Play Area
An interactive lighthouse is the centerpiece of the children’s play area in Glacier Bay Landing. Play features include two slides, a climbing wall, a soft-landing zone and various interactive elements.

Restroom and Nursing Area
Glacier Bay Landing offers a new restroom and changing area for Zoo guests. The area includes 11 stalls in the women’s restroom, three stalls and three urinals in the men’s restroom and two family restrooms, each equipped with a child-sized toilet. A privacy fence and umbrellas create a semi-private and shaded area for nursing mothers to utilize during their visit.

Ticket Booth
A new three-window ticket booth allows visitors to purchase tickets to all Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium attractions and limited merchandise.
