Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has a variety of volunteer groups that may be just for you. It involves spending time with like minded individuals while helping the Zoo accomplish its many goals by becoming a Zoo volunteer.
There is great reward in teaching others to see the wonders of nature and watch a mind grow. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has a selection of volunteer opportunities that are both interesting and fulfilling. Some positions interact with Zoo visitors, while others may work behind the scenes. Whatever the job, each and everyone is valued and performs a service for Omaha's Zoo and Aquarium that cannot be measured in dollars and cents.
Externships are available to fourth-year veterinary students and internships are available to those with a veterinary degree (DVM, VMD).
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has several programs available for students in 4th through 12th grade. See below to find the program most appropriate for your child, deadlines and meeting dates.
What is the XYZ program? XYZ is designed for students currently in 4th grade through 6th grade who have an interest in animals and want to expand their knowledge of the natural world. XYZ members will enhance their knowledge and skills from a unique combination of classroom and volunteering experiences.
How do you become a part of the XYZ program? Students interested in applying for the XYZ program will need to complete an online application form and short essay.
Students will need to be available for classroom experiences April and May on the FOURTH Saturday of each month. Students will have the opportunity to volunteer during June and July.
There is a fee upon acceptance to join the program. Cost is $60 for Omaha's Zoo and Aquarium members, $75 for non members and $30 for returning members. The new application season for 2020 will open on November 1, 2019 through January 31, 2020.

What is the Junior Crew? Junior Crew is designed to challenge students currently in 7th and 8th grade in the natural sciences fields including biology and zoology. Junior Crew members will enhance their knowledge of the natural world along with experiencing rewards from volunteering their time, energy and talents.
Become a part of the Junior Crew! Students interested in applying for the Junior Crew will need to complete an online application form and a short essay.
Students will need to be available for Junior Crew meetings April and May on the SECOND Saturday of each month. Students will have the opportunity to volunteer during June and July. Are you a teen who is interested in volunteering at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium? Are you interested in animal care, research and conservation? If so, then we have the perfect opportunity for you! Zoo Crew is a group of dedicated students who support the Zoo's mission by volunteering their time and talents. They participate in educational programs, on-grounds programs, and have the opportunity to assist in an animal area.
Zoo Crew is broken into tiers based on the number of years of volunteer service with Zoo Crew. Tier I students will complete a comprehensive training program that takes a look a the Zoo's animal collection and exhibits, along with a variety of careers in the zoological field. Combine these class experiences with volunteering and you get one amazing opportunity to explore and learn!
Cost is $70 for Omaha's Zoo and Aquarium members, $85 for non members. Fee is due upon acceptance to the program. Students interested in the program must begin the process by filling out a preliminary application.
1. Fill out the online application. You will receive a separate notification upon acceptance to the program which contains further information which must be completed in order to join Zoo Crew.
2. You must attend the Kick-Off Meeting at the Zoo: September 28 at 5:00pm. Please bring a parent/guardian with you to the meeting.
