Two male and two female cheetah cubs were born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo on October 26, 2010. Cheetahs have been a part of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo animal collection since 1965 but these were the first cheetah cubs ever to be born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.
There are only about 250 cheetahs in 52 North American zoos. Only three other litters were born in 2010 making these cubs a significant increase to the captive population. The cheetah is the world’s fastest land mammal. Cheetahs can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only three seconds. Their average life span is 10-12 years. They can range from three and half to four and a half feet tall and can weigh between 77 and 143 pounds. Cheetahs are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Vulnerable.
